Overturning Citizens United and Restoring the Voting Rights Act: Big money has hijacked our politics and we must overturn Citizens United to ensure all of our voices are heard. We must also restore the Voting Rights Act and fight back against voter suppression that targets minorities and tries to silence us.

Fight back against voter suppression that targets minorities

Q: What federal policies do you support regarding campaign funding and voting rights?

Rashida Tlaib: We must overturn Citizens United to ensure all of our voices are heard. We need to explore public financing models that allow politicians more time to talk to voters and that end the dependence of politicians on big money donors and corporate interests. We must also restore the Voting Rights Act and fight back against voter suppression that targets minorities and tries to silence us. We need to make voter registration automatic for 18 year olds, allow returning citizens to vote, expand early voting and vote by mail, and in general do whatever we can to make participating in the democratic process easier.

No photo ID for absentee voting

Legislative Summary:A person who applies in person to register to vote shall identify himself or herself by presenting an official state identification card issued to that person. The secretary of state shall develop a voter registration training program for third-party voter registration organizations that teaches the proper procedure for taking a voter registration application.

Veto Summary:SB754 precludes voter registration groups from receiving and delivering registration applications until at least one member of their organization has received training. While our current Secretary of State would be very proactive on offering training, it is important to ensure that future officials provide proper training. Voting rights are precious and we need to work especially hard to make it possible for people to vote.

Legislative Outcome:Rep. Tlaib voted NAY; passed Senate 26-11-1, Feb. 14; passed House 66-43-1, June 12; vetoed by Gov., July 3

PVS:Regulate campaign donations from corporations.

Tlaib supports the PVS survey question on regulating campaign donations

Project Vote Smart inferred whether candidates agree or disagree with the statement, 'Campaign Finance: Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?' PVS self-description: "The Political Courage Test provides voters with positions on key issues. Historically, candidates have failed to complete our test due to the advice they receive from their advisors and out of fear of negative attack ads."
