Tim Murphy: Girlfriend got divorced due to his extramarital affair

Congressman Tim Murphy publicly admitted to having an extramarital affair with a personal friend, issuing a statement about the relationship hours after the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette prevailed in a court motion to unseal a divorce action.

Rep. Murphy is not a party to the divorce. However, the husband in the case, Jesse Sally, a sports medicine physician, sought in July to depose the congressman as part of his divorce from Shannon Edwards, a forensic psychologist.

Following the hearing, Murphy issued a statement: "Last year I became involved in an affair with a personal friend. This is nobody's fault but my own, and I offer no excuses. To the extent that there should be any blame in this matter, it falls solely upon me. I ask the media to respect the privacy of my family. They have done nothing wrong and deserve to be left alone."

Murphy, 64, is married. Ms. Edwards, 32, met Murphy when she contacted his office to volunteer to do work on his mental health bill.

Tom Wolf: Schools that teach; jobs that pay; government that works

Some of the things I have talked about since I started running for governor two years ago: they boil down to three big themes that I hope will define my time in office:
  1. Schools that teach: because for our children to succeed tomorrow, every child must have access to a great education, and teachers must have the resources they need to deliver a great education;
  2. Jobs that pay: because for our economy to begin humming again, we need to be good partners with the private sector, enabling it to grow and create good jobs that will strengthen our middle-class families; and
  3. Government that works: because for our state to be great again, we need a government that is more efficient and less wasteful. One that restores faith in the fundamental notion that our democracy still works.
